EV Charger Installation Cost Guide (Philadelphia)

February 1, 2027 · J.R.'s Electric

If you just bought an EV — or you're about to — you're probably wondering what it actually costs to get a home charger installed properly. Here's what drives that number.

Level 1 vs. Level 2 Chargers

Level 1 uses a standard 120V household outlet. It technically works, but it's slow — often 15-20+ hours for a full charge. Most homeowners upgrading find it's not a real solution for daily driving.

Level 2 runs on a 240V circuit, similar to an electric dryer or range, and can fully charge most EVs overnight. This is what most homeowners actually want installed, and it's what we install most often.

What Affects the Cost

Your panel's available capacity. If your panel has room for a new 240V circuit, installation is more straightforward. If your panel is already near capacity, a panel upgrade may need to happen first — this is one of the most common reasons an EV charger quote comes back higher than expected.

Distance from panel to charger location. A charger installed a few feet from your panel costs less than one requiring a long conduit run to a detached garage or the far side of the house.

Charger location. Garage installs are typically simpler than exterior installs, which may need weatherproof-rated equipment and additional conduit work.

Permit requirements. Philadelphia and surrounding municipalities require permits for new circuit installations like this — that's part of a legitimate quote, not an add-on some contractors skip (and shouldn't).

Whether you're supplying your own charger. Some homeowners already own a charger unit; others want us to spec and provide one. Either works, but it affects the total.

What's Included in a Proper Install

  • Load calculation to confirm your panel can safely support the new circuit
  • A dedicated 240V circuit run to the charger location
  • Proper breaker sizing for your specific charger
  • Weatherproofing if installed outdoors
  • Permit and inspection coordination

Why This Isn't a DIY or Handyman Job

A Level 2 charger draws serious continuous current for hours at a time. An improperly sized circuit or breaker isn't just a code violation — it's a real fire risk. This is licensed electrician work, not a weekend project.

Get a Real Number for Your Home

Every home's panel, garage layout, and charger choice is different, which is why we don't quote a flat number online. Request an estimate and we'll do a real load calculation and give you a firm price before any work starts.

This post covers general educational information about EV charger installation and is not a substitute for an in-person evaluation. Electrical work should always be performed by a licensed electrician.
